Are you allowed to light fires in Australia?

Could someone please tell me if you are allowed to light fires in your backyard without a fire permit in NSW Australia.

Generally no, it causing a disturbance to neighbours and then they'll complain and the police will charge you. If you want a bonfire, you have to be on farm land, and it can't be during the fire ban season because that will also see you prosecuted.

I think as long as it's contained and there is no fire ban then you should be fine.

Check the RFS website for more information, call them if you need to.
