How do I recover files from my laptop's crashed hard drive?

Ok, here's the situation: I went to turn on my computer today, and all I get is a black screen. Sure, I still have my Taskbar, but that's it. Sure enough, my hard drive craps out on me. No mechanical problems as far as I know of, no ticking or loud obnoxious noises. I know, "why didn't you back your sh*t up to an external?", you ask. I've been strapped for cash believe it or not.

Main question: How do I go about recovering my files from my crashed hard drive so that I can put them on another HDD? Would it be easier (i.e. cheaper) to get this one repaired? I just want my music back :(

I'm open to any and all suggestions :)

Thanks in advance!

you can connect the hard drive to another computer as a slave drive or external drive, and then use recovery software to recover your files
