While I do NOT recommend the 11 inch version, (I'd get the 15 or 17 inch)
It is absolutely false that an alienware is not as durable as other brands. It is substantially better built for several reasons
1. TRUE gaming computers are built with different design objectives. While all motherboards are standardized for current. Just like mil spec is different than consumer machines, True gaming designs also take current into effect, cooling into effect and physical shock into effect (gforce, not electric shock). If you have seen the inside of an xps or an alienware, there are numerous "niceties" such as cable guides that are not just there for cosmetic reasons. They make the unit more reliable. Those niceties cost money in all stages of production, in design, in the cost of the extra materials, and in the extra time it takes to assemble.
2 Alienware is built by dell who make units that also exceed industry average. They have ALOT of experience with XPS and their pro lines in terms of engineering for reliability and in excellent assembly proceses. EVERY fortune 500 company, the federal government, almost every state government, every branch of the military use dell.
3 alienware are built from CHERRY PICKED parts off the dell supply chain. All parts are NOT created equal. Based on where a chip is from the die, the fab that it came out of, how recently the baths were refreshed, there is a BIG difference in even the same exact model chip, say a 2820. The mfgrs know it and the OEMS know it. Companies more interested in reliability will pay a higher price for an "a" quality chip and they can expect and often do contract for very stiff penalties for failure or for being out of tolerance. A crummy company might buy a "c" grade chip . They pay less and really don't care how good or bad it is because their customers are foolish enough to only buy based on "specs".
4 alienware are built by "better" assembly techs and they do NOT have the same "get it out the door pressure. They have the luxury of assembling at a speed where they will not miss anything, take their time to make better connections. And I believe it is true that a stressed employee is more likely to make a mistake or to sabotage a system than a happy employee is.
5 while ALL tech support is bad, alienware has a dedicated tier dedicated just to them. You don't have to deal with waiting as much as the other customers do. They have more "latitude to help you" in terms of time they can spend with you and in what they can do for you. They are NOT as good as even entry level dell used to be 5 years ago. Back then even first level support had an MCP. but they are still head and shoulders above the rest. The downward pressure caused by crummy brands has hurt the industry.
Your friends are just saying that because alienware or falcon northwest are more expensive and they want to seem "cool'. Your friends do not work in the industry and your friends probably read alot of magazines which have alot of misinformation.
