United Fruit id a U.S. corporation trading in tropical fruit, mostly bananas. Formed in 1899.

The owned much land in Central America and controlled transportation through the railroads. Thusly, they discouraged road building in Guatemala because they did not want any competition.

In 1954, the democratically elected government of Guatemala was overthrown, may said it was under the direction of the Eisenhower administration. They had been heavily lobbied by United Fruit to get involved.

In 1928, Columbia experienced the Banana Massacre. The army slaughtered thousands of protesters. Many said that the army was acting under instructions from United Fruit.
