Should you come up with a new invention the official authorities would protect your rights to be the sole person to gain profits from using/selling it. In simple words, it guaranteed that you would be the only one offering an attractive new device/machine = profit.

Remember that patents also expire after some time - this way society as a whole can embrace, use and upgrade the idea, without the inventor hogging it for too long.

Because a patent meant that someone else couldn't steal your invention, that it would be protected and you would receive the financial reward for it.

Patent stands for wisdom, honour and wealth. Who will reject these?
