Polish-born Albert Sabin. In 1957, the WHO asked him to test his oral vaccine on children in parts of Russia, Holland, Mexico, Chile, Sweden and Japan. It was on on "Sabin Sunday," April 24, 1960, that the first testing in the U.S. took place although some sources say it was at the end of 1959. The vaccine itself was probably developed in 1954 or 1955 and was first taken by Salk himself and his research associates before it was tested on prison inmates.
