Here are the keyword research methods I have been using (successfully and profitably).

    Google AdWords Keyword Tool -

    SEMRush -

    Keyword Discovery -

    Wordtracker -

    Word Mixer -

    Google Trends -

    Yahoo! Clues -

    Yandex Wordstat -

Google Related Searches and Google Wonderwheel - type in a keyword in Google search engine and click on the Wonderwheel and Related Searches links on your left to get more keyword suggestions

Google Autocomplete - start typing a keyword in Google, and search engine's Autocompelte algorighm will kick in to suggest more keywords and keyphrases for you

Bing Related Searches - type in a keyword in Bing search engine and see the the Related Searches keyword suggestions on your left

Ask Related Searches Suggestions - type in a keyword in search engine and see the the Related Searches keyword suggestions on your right

Competition Search - harvesting and analyzing keywords from top 10 competitor sites

Misspelled Keywords - check your traffic logs and analytics tools (such as Google Analytics or Google Webmaster Tools) to find out if your keyword is frequently misspelled and target its misspelled version for your PPC campaign, anchor text, or you can even build a micro site around misspelled keywords if you find they are frequently searched for.

*All the above listed methods are incorporated into the Rank Tracker tool from SEO Powersuite, so I am actually using one tool to retrieve my keyword data from different sources.

As for the keyword research theory, I started out with a free seo guide by Dan Richmond, below is the link to his recommendations on how to do keyword research by hand and with seo tools.

You can use the Google AdWords free keyword tool to find the keywords relevant to your chosen niche. Then you should keep a list of the keywords you like.

Your main or primary keyword should be in your website's title and URL. It should also be in the meta description. Your meta keywords should also have the primary and secondary keywords in them.

For your content, the main keyword for an article should be in the title, in the first and last sentences as well as in sentences in-between. You can include other keywords but the number of keywords should not be more than 5% of the total words used in a webpage.

Instead of using other Keyword tools available in the market that may be on trail version for some days only.. it is better to use Google SK tool or rather Google keyword tool (ad words).

The Google tools are always better as they provide a wide and filtered results as per the users need.

Google Insights or Google trends can also help in it....

Your best bet is to go to Google planner if you haven 't got an account then you can sign up for one for free, then add your seed keyword like, "dog training", then hit 'get ideas', on the next page click on the keyword idea's. There you have all your keywords and you can use the filters on the left side if you like to dig down more, for eg. you can filter keywords with more or less than say a 1000, and you can filter the CPC (cost per click) this is mainly used for people paying for ads.

You can also use the include exclude option for sorting out words like, free, sale, what ever you like.

Hope that helps you a bit.

Personally I would use Google Tool to search keywords. It gives you the ability to search a phrase. So for instance if you have a blog post title you could input that and then decide what works best. This is a method I enjoy
