    sik-hung,

Good point. "in" can mean "at home" as an adverb.

I think "not in" does not necessarily mean 不在家, the sentence could be like this with "in" functioning as a prepositiion:

May I speak to Linda? I'm sorry. She is not in (the office/the job/etc).

" go on a picnic" is the more common phrase which should be used here as: He goes on a picnic in Sai Kung.

"go for" can mean "to go somewhere in order to have". But the sentence is better written as: He goes to Sai Kung for a picnic.

    sik-hung,

    I agree with you.

What is your suggested preposition for the blank then? Please share with us.

    3. 'To keep or retain something' is 'to hold on to or hold back something', not 'hold on something.'

'Hold on' without to means to continue or to stop and wait etc.

For 3, 'To keep or retain something' is 'to hold on to or hold back something', not 'hold on something.'

'Hold on' without to means to continue or to stop and wait etc.

Q6 : May I speak to Linda? I am sorry. She is not __in__

在這句內, in 不是 preposition. 那是adv.解(在家裡), " not in "= 不在家內.

    Eicachan,

    我是根據文法上說: " 介詞不能單獨使用.一定要與noun /pron.一起以構成介詞短語, 當作noun./ adj./adv.來使用.

    只有單一in在. 誤是adv.亦是合理. 若答話者身不在家,最好表達詳盡一些.

    我若用錯prep,只是引來大笑,一樣是對的.只是意思不同而已.

    1. Can you play something___like___the piano ? (一些類似piano)

    2. I am swimming ___beside___ the beach. (在海灘的旁邊)

    3. Hold __on__ your books. I will collect them.(Keep著/我會來收,不用你來)

    4. I go __for__ a walk __down__ the countryside. (沿著農村走)

    5. He goes __on / for__ a picnic in Sai Kung. (各有各意思)

    6. May I speak to Linda? I am sorry. She is not__?__. (要找高手出來)

Attn. eicachan : 應是hold on to........
