You're overthinking this. Seriously. A mobile app and mobile based app are the same. The only things that differ are that a based app may only run on phones from certain providers. A web app though is different in that it uses web signal (data) to perform its function. Facebook on your phone is an example of a web app. It works on your phone to do things on the internet/web. It's not really useful without a connection to the Internet. But a mobile app like angry birds can be used at any time on your phone without a connection.

Web Apps: Web apps are websites that are optimized for mobile viewing. Web apps can't be distributed through the iTunes App Store, Google Play, BlackBerry App World, etc. Internet connection is always required to run these apps.

Mobile Apps: Mobile apps are software applications that are written in native code per platform like Android, iOS, etc. Mobile apps are distributed through the iTunes App Store, Google Play, BlackBerry App World, etc. Mobile apps must be developed separately for each platform. It can be downloaded directly to a mobile device. Internet connection doesn't always required to run the mobile apps.

Basically there are three forms of Apps, Native apps, hybrid apps and Web apps. Look at the following definations for better understanding of each of these.

Native Apps: Mobile apps built using Objective-C (for iOS), Java (for Android), or .NET (for Windows), for a particular platform. The code is written for a specific platform and won’t work for other platforms.

Hybrid Apps: App built using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript, put into a native wrapper that enables it to access the device’s hardware. Built using tools like Xamarin, PhoneGap and Appcelerator Titanium.

Web Apps: Also built using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. Similar to mobile sites, opens in mobile browsers. The user needs Internet to access the apps and such apps cannot be sold on apps stores. Also, apps cannot access on board hardware and software in mobiles.

I feel that this is enough for you to understand the difference. Explore more on this at http://www.cygnet-infotech.com/blog/native-apps-vs...
