Whats the highest a cpu and motherboard temp should go up to?

I just finished building my first computer and I'm worried my cpu might be to high at idle its usually 25c motherbaord and 27c cpu used google chrome it goes up to about 30 motherboard and 42 playing portal it goes up to 37 mother baord and 42c cpu ish is the temperature safe and whats the highest it can go to?

If you have an intel Core i3/i5/i7 the highest the temp should go is 75*C. Anything below the 70's is ideal for these processors. The 80's is a No, No!


If you have an AMD processor like the Phenom II or the Athlon II your temps should be kept below 60*C

The later Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad and other late 775 processors are the same. The lower 70's is the limit. The earlier Core 2 Quads should be kept below the lower 60's.

Prime 95 is the best way to see how hot your processor runs.

Processors can handle usually up to 60-70C without many problems, its the fact that a CPU wears down with more heat and performs better when cooled. When properly cooled a CPU lasts a lot longer. 50C and under for Load temps and 35C under for idle temps is when you shouldnt be worried or get a new cooler. So your all good.

Now with the motherboard im pretty sure a motherboard just gets hot because of all the other parts and how its channeling electricity. So dont worry about your motherboard temps. Unless its above 60C

If you just built it and it is overheating, did you use thermal paste between CPU and heat sink? This could be the reason, and you could damage the CPU if you continue to use it?

It depends what processor it is. If it's an Intel, they're usually safe up to about 95-100c (though being at this temperature for long periods of time is bad), if it's an AMD, it's maximum safe temperature is about 62-65c.

CPUs can go up to 78c (Intel)-95c (AMD), so the motherboard must be able to go past this.
