What is the Papal Swiss Guard commitment?

I like the idea of joining the Swiss Guard, but as it is a religious thing, I want to know if you join for life, or if you can retire at some time?

As an American citizen, you would not be allowed to join the Swiss Guard. It is only open to citizens of Switzerland who are members of the Swiss Army. This is due to the country's historical neutrality, dating back to 1674. Once you are a member of the Swiss Army, you need to be assigned to the Vatican. The regular rules on re-enlistment and retirement or discharge apply.

First you have to be a member of the Swiss Army and be assigned to the Swiss Guard in the Vatican City. This is very difficult to do, and you do get a military retirement, you do not serve until you die.
