I DVR the show and have watched that part twice now. My wife and I feel Rulon quit the show because he lost the car pull race, and so desperately wanted to be on the "Wheaties" box, which other Olympic Gold Medalists have had the privilege. Although his wrestling gold medal was a huge win and an upset over his Russian competitor, Rulon never made it on the box.
He saw this race as a way of correcting a past injustice.
Rulon probably felt the car pull race was unfair in several ways. From what I saw,....
1. A past, and rather in shape competitor, Tara, was brought back to compete against others that had been training for only a few months.
2. Tara's car was on a relatively flat and level surface, (inside lane 1),while his car was at the very top of a banked incline, (outside lane 8), which would cause his car to experience more friction while it tilted toward the drivers side of the car as it was pulled forward. This may not cause that much difference if the race was a short distance, or if it was won by several yards or feet, but given the 1/2 mile track and the inch or two he lost by, I could understand his complaint.
3. Tara was competing to benefit her new"foundation" to "give back to the community". The show even ran a small clip of what she is planning on doing with it. "The Biggest Loser" producers love to promote that kind of stuff. It reflects back on them and their long running NBC show.
Tara was definetly brought in that day as a "ringer", given all the advantages, and set up to win.
If you remember, Rulon's attitude was okay until they came back from the car pull race. That is when they noticed his stand-offish behavior and indifference at continuing with the competition.
In discussing this with my wife, we came to the conclusion that Rulon probably got into an argument with the shows producers after the race, and threatened to quit and expose his reasons for leaving. The producers said quit if you want, but you cannot slander the "Biggest Loser" name by saying they are unfair. The competitors do sign a bunch or waivers and legal paperwork before appearing on the show.
They probably told Rulon that if you quit,.... you quit for "personal reasons", and that is what he said, on camera, at the weigh in.
It is sad that it went down like it did. Rulon should have toughed it out and pressed on. So many other people out there would give anything to have a chance on that show.
Rulon could have won the finale. . Too bad his emotions and anger got the best of him.
