SDM (Squad Designated Marksman) is a vital role in the Scout platoons and Infantry line platoons.

An SDM is usually a Soldier in the grades of E-3 to E-4 and has completed SDM school at either the of the two US Army Sniper school locations.

An SDM is not considered a Sniper, BUT there are only a few things that separate a Sniper from an SDM.

FIELD CRAFT, Stalking, and a little bit more time on shooting.

SDMs in the Army can be issued an M-14, SR 110, M21, or an M24. Or any other type sniper rifle.

SDMs primary job is to serve as an ordinary rifleman in a platoon. His SECONDARY mission is to be the SDM... get what Im saying here???

SDMs that are not issued any of the special rifles will get an ACOG scope usually OR a Mil-Dot scope.

If the Army is the same as the Marines, i can answer this.

In Marines, we have whats called a DM. Designated Marksman. There usually on the platoon lvl. 1 dm and 1 spotter.

They carry their normal m4, but can also be given multiple types of special rifles. Our dm's are authorized to use either the m82a1 SASR (Special Application Scoped Rifle) (aka. a .50 cal that can be fit into a suitcase) or an m110 sniper rifle (occasionally an m14 as well)

they arent given any special optics for their primary m4's. They dont attend any special sniper school, but they can attend whats called SASR training. Its like a dumbed down sniper school, where they practice firing scoped weapons, range estimation, etc.. Basically their designed to fight as part of the platoon, and in the event long range coverage is needed, can utilize their scoped weapon in an over watch position.

He's the guy who shoots best and gets better optics.

He is by no means or definition a "sniper".
