To answer this you need to divide 1100 by 100 to get the stops in between the house and at the furtherest R2. However, there is also the stop at the first resident's house to be considered--you have to add one for that to make the answer all inclusive

Number of stops = 1100/100 +1

Here is a diagram showing you why you need the +1. The dashes represent the 100 miles between stops (the x). R1 is at zero distance and wouldn't be counted if you only find out how many 100-mile segments there are.

R1--x--x--x--x--x--x--x--x--x--x--R2

Here's another example:

let's say you are given a book of 10 tickets to sell (and you have to pay for any that you don't return). The tickets are numbered 1-10. You sell ticket #1-8 and turn in money for 8 tickets and the remaining tickets. To find out how many tickets you returned the organizer subtracts 9 (the first remaining number) from 10. That gives you 1, and the organizer tells you that you owe for one ticket. You point out that but there are two tickets left. So, you tell him that he must add 1 to include the ticket with the first remaining number.

There are twelve stops. 1100/100 = 11, then you have to add one for the stop at the first resident's house.

This is easiest if you draw a diagram. A & B are the 2 residents, and the stops in between are 100, 200, etc.

A 100__ 200__ 300__400__500__600__700__800__ 900__ 1000__ B

it would just be 1,100 divided by 100. so, 1100/100 = 11. the train makes 11 stops.
