The problems within East Timor were basically a struggle for independence from Indonesia and not related to the Cold War. Whilst still a soldier and before he entered politics, President Suharto of Indonesia led a purge on Indonesian Communists in 1965 so it is unlikely that the Cold War had any effect on his actions against East Timor - especially the most recent ones, which occurred 10 years after the break up of the Soviet Union.
