BM's are neither ignorant nor lazy. There is a saying the Coast Guard "Either you're a BM or you work for one." There are a lot of them. They are hard working, good people. My ex was an MST, my son is going to A school for OS. You have to know what you want to do. All 3 career paths are very good but they are very different. The best thing you can do is join, go in as a non-rate, talk to people in each of the rates, talk to people in rates you may not have even considered. Then make a decision, get on the A school list of your choice (provided you qualify per your ASVAB score) and have a great career.
