I think there is life. It's difficult to say there is NO life, or there IS life because we just don't know. What many people have said, and what I agree on, is that the earth, our solar system; even our Galaxy is nothing in comparison the the scale of our universe.
Now life is a tricky little devil to please...(metaphorically speaking, =P) and can only survive in the right situation. I do not mean any offence to anyone here, but in this topic, god has no place. You have to understand that the earth being were it is is totally a fluke. Its lucky. We were not MEANT to be here. Humans have no purpose, scientifically speaking, and to that we must see ourselves as simple lucky to be here.
When looking into if there's life out there, you would agree that for life; like on earth; conditions would have to be pretty similar. People think of alien's stereotypically like they see in movies such as 'Alian' but it has been said that intelligent life out there may not be that different from us. For more advanced life, they would, quite simply, be more efficient and effective with there physical and psychological doings. But looking on the other hand, they would be adapted to there habitat, therefore, in our eyes, may not look like perfect forms of life.
My opinion: we are mistakes. If humans were not put on this earth, which I believe we weren't, (I'm an atheist,) then that must mean we have no purpose. By looking at that, you are saying that something that wasn't 'meant' to happen is technically a mishap. A sheer shred of luck. A bit harsh on the human race but a fun concept nevertheless. ;)
Alians may be watching us right now. Think about it, were not 2, so just because we can't see them, doesn't mean they can't see us. OK, in all likelihood there not watching us, but then why would they? If they are sophisticated enough to be able to travel to earth, (when we know there isn't any life for light years!) and spy on us without being detected they would probably not be interested in our planet. Think about it, we have only just created synthetic bacteria; we've ruined this planets natural recourse's and caused mass extinction and disease across the planet. If anything, they would probably just fly past, perhaps give us a wave, and move on to find a more suitable home.
I know most of what I've said is theory, but I hope I've given you something to think about. =)
P.S now I could go on into the proper science, the facts and pages and pages about this subject. I am quite passionate about it... but that would leave me no time to live my life; why? Because there's to much! It would take ME months, perhaps years, to follow each theory and story up; and this is coming from the perspective of a 14 year old kid; imagine how long it would take to eliminate all possibilities if you were a scientist with in depth knowing about this area. Do you see what I mean?
