Sports have always been considered one of the oldest forms of entertainment in the country. Currently, besides the fact that the Greeks invented the Olympic Games, the two most popular sports in Greece are Soccer and Basketball. Greece is among one of the "Worlds Top Basketball Powers" as they are ranked Number 4 in the entire world. The Greek Basketball Team won the European Championship twice in 1987 and in 2005, they were Runners Up in the 2006 FIBA World Championship, and won the Bronze at the 2009 EuroBasket.

The second major Sport in Greece, but still the most popular. is soccer. Over the past few years, Greece has risen to be known for having one of the greatest Soccer Teams in the world. The highest they have ever been ranked was Number 8 in the World in 2008. Currently they are ranked Number 10 and hold leads over countries such as Italy, France, and the United States. The Greek Soccer Club is best known for winning the 2004 UEFA European Championship. They have also qualified for the 2008 UEFA European Championship and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Aside from International Soccer, Greece also has the "Greek Super League." The most notable team is Olympiacos having won an impressive 38 Championships.

Greece has risen to prominence in a number of sporting areas in recent decades. Football in particular has seen a rapid transformation, with the Greek national football team winning the 2004 UEFA European Football Championship. Greek athletes have also achieved significant success and have won world and olympic titles in numerous sports during the years, such as basketball, wrestling, water polo, athletics, weightlifting, with many of them becoming international stars inside their sports. The successful organisation of the ATHENS 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games led also to the further development of many sports and has led to the creation of many World class sport venues all over Greece and especially in Athens. Greek athletes have won 143 medals for Greece in 15 different olympic sports at the Summer Olympic Games, including the Intercalated Games, an achievement which makes Greece one of the top nations globally in medals per capita.

    Greek sports? Here you go:

    Papaki slalom:

You take a 50cc motorbike and you start going down Kifisias Ave. as fast as possible avoiding all cars. Extra points awarded for passing red lights.

    Pitsadoros Papaki slalom:

Like the above, only driving on the left side of the road against the traffic. Only trained professionals can do this.

    Parking search

Very popular sport, practiced but tens of thousands every day.

    Carnation throw

Practiced at night in specially designed places. This sport has several variations like “hit the singer” or “hit the tall blond that dances over there” etc etc, very entertaining but can become dangerous or even fatal since copious amounts of alcohol are consumed and that blond might have a date.

    Line skipping.

The aim of this sport is to move from the end of any particular line up, to the frond, employing any possible method. When it’s practiced en mass its particularly entertaining.

And here is our national sport:

You see we Greeks being an intellectual and philosophical nation would never make a national sport something that requires physical effort. Rather, we excel in mental “action”.

    Fault transference.

This is an intellectual sport with ultimate goal to remove from an individual or a team (ranging from a couple of members to several million) any wrongdoing of anything, ever, in thought or in action. Basically the whole concept is based in several axioms like:

    «Φταίνε όλοι εκτός από εμένα»

«Εγώ θα κάνω του κεφαλιού μου και εσείς να πάτε να πνιγείτε»

«Ποιος εγώ? Ξέρεις ρε ποιος είμαι εγώ? »

Its very hard to explaining to a foreigner, and any Greek that lives in Greece knows what I am talking about.

The Greeks are only interested in football, football, football and football (meaning soccer, not the american football). And they also play some basketball from times to times.
