Never been to Long Beach, but I have lived in RI coming from Virginia. Im 27, engineer, single, no kids, cultured.
RI is the home of Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) which are GREAT schools for someone looking to further their education. RI has some of the best seafood you will taste and plenty of restaurants to choose from. The summers are great and the humidity is low.
If you like the beaches then they have a few out here that everyone says are beautiful (and they are nice) but ask yourself how many times you are actually going to go. Most of the people here between the age of 14-32 are at or below the poverty level and the drug use for ALL age groups is astronomical! I remember reading online that Rhode Island was ranked in the top five out of the 50 states with heavy (hard) drug use according to statistical studies (and you can see it in the faces of these people). It also seems like everybody is angry ALL the time...its not a happy place. People drive very erratically and have A LOT of accidents due to drunkenness!
The winters are terrible and you can expect to have to purchase snow tires in order to drive safely.
Pricing for apartments are high and you dont get much for your money.
The decision is up to you, but If I were you I would enjoy the weather and the people over there.
