Is it possible to open a bank account online without visiting a branch in town?

Yes you can open online or you can also open one over the phone. You usually then have 30 days to fund the account or it will close for inactivity. All documents will be mailed to you. You usually only need your basic information and there maybe some random public record questions to prove you really are you. Quick and easy either way.Source(s): I am currently employed by a large national bank.

Yes, just log onto the bank you want to register with and fill in all the forms, you will receive paperwork through the post, i.e. cards, information etc.
You will find more and more banks want you to register online as it saves them money not employing office staff on the high street.
