Ordinarily, earthquakes under 7.5 magnitude do not cause tsunamis, although there have been exceptions. Most tsunamis occur when earthquakes are 7.5 magnitude or higher.

Large earthquakes, volcanoes, meteors and large explosions under the ocean can also set off tsunamis. There have even been occurrences of tsunamis on large lakes.
