Houses in that price range are often sold for cash - no mortgage. Property taxes, utilities, maintenance, homeowners insurance, security system, etc - house-related expenses, not family support - should easily run $5000/month without any mortgage. Then add car expenses, food, and all the rest to calculate your household's budget.
People buying homes in that range, sticking to the guidelines of a house no more than 2 - 3 times annual income, have incomes of $750,000 or better, of which about 60% goes to federal & state income and other taxes. With only 1/2 down and a jumbo mortgage of a million, plan on roughly $10,000 monthly mortgage payment. Plus of course the 5k in expenses.
