there are 2 main differences....and they both have to do with organization.....the first is that you meet at the park and you don't have referees so you call your own fouls...the 2 is that you play to a certain score rather than play for a certain amount of time.....the 2 main players will take turns selecting their team members from those that are available and who want to play....there are no substitutions so it is straight run five on five....most games are the first team that reaches the set point winning number and it is usually win by 2....so if you are playing to 21 the game can't end 21 to 20 it has to be 21 to 19 ....and calling your own fouls is where the term ( no blood no foul) came from....you can see some of the best games on your local playgrounds...even better than the highest level college games...however many professional contracts prevent their players from playing pick up games because they can be rather physical.........Rucker Park in New York and Turkey Thickett park in DC are where the legends of many great street ballers began...although every city in the country has famous basketball urban legends...

The usual points for a pickup game is 21 if you allow 3 pointers. If not it is usally played to 10 field goals and you have to win by 2 field goals. Another rule that is sometimes played is "make it take it", where you get to keep the ball after a made bucket. Having said all that, you can play whatever rules the participants agree on. Or what is to your advantage.....?? Good Luck

there's no real set rule on how many points a pickup game goes to. it just something that everyone agrees on. in my experience, it's usually been 15, inside the arc is 1, outside is 2. sometimes, everyone will also agree on whether or not to put the "win by 2" rule in effect. again, no real, official rule that says how many points a pickup game goes to. just something that's agreed upon by everyone there.
