Self-feeding activity was detected in all tanks from

day 1 (September 13) and there was a trend for activity

to increase over the first 3–4 weeks (phase I) despite an

almost constant (slightly decreasing) temperature (Fig.

1A). Since two fish in Tank B died by jumping out of the

tank during the night in phases I and III, we calculated

the number of daily feeder activations per fish in each

week (Fig. 1C). The number of daily feeder activations

per fish decreased from weeks 5–6 onwards, at the same

time that water temperature and photoperiod declined.

High positive correlations were noted between the

number of daily feeder activations per fish and water

temperature (r=0.984, n=8, Pb0.001) and between

that and photoperiod (r=0.976, n=8, Pb0.001). Hourly

feeder activations expressed as a percentage of the daily

total and light intensity in each phase are shown in Fig.

2. Peaks of self-feeding in dusk were seen in phase I

(Fig. 2A). Nocturnal self-feeding pattern was observed

in phase II (Fig. 2B). No significant differences of selffeeding

were seen in phase III, although it tended to be

high in dawn (Fig. 2C).

All fish grew during the experiment, with growth

being most rapid up to the eighth week, and growth was

low between the eighth and 12th weeks (Fig. 1C). Since

no significant differences were observed in the feed

efficiency ratios (Tank B was omitted since two fish died

during the experiment), specific growth rate and growth

rate among tanks (two fish which died during the

experiment in Tank B were omitted from the calculation),

we combined the data. Feed efficiency ratios of

the Tanks A and C were 83.1% and 83.3%, respectively.

Specific growth rate was 0.81±0.04 (body weight / day)

(mean±S.E., n=11).
