Thriller/Mystery set in the bayous of Louisiana?

I'm looking for a really good mystery/thriller genre novel set in the deep south. I'd like it to have a gothic kind of feel, but it doesn't have to have supernatural elements. I'm thinking a book that conjures visions similar to the movie Skeleton Key's setting, if that helps a little. I'm not big on harlequin romance type books, so I'm aware of the Bad Boys on the Bayou series and those similar already. Thanks!

Anne Rice's books. She brought vampires mainstream back in the 1980s.
