Why do christians say that the old testament is old fashioned and isnt used today?

whenever they are called out on one of the many contradictions between the old and new testamnet they say the old testament is old fashioned and is no longer used. i was told this once when i questioned a preacher about him shaving his beard when the old testament say tht its a sin for a man to do so. But then he wants to turn around and preach creationism from the book of genisis....WTF.

I believe that the reason why the old testament is considered "old fashioned" in modern times is because as Christians, we believe that when Jesus came, he came to rectify some of the believes we used to have-in the Old Testament- . For example, this can be seen in Romans 14, where Paul is telling us not to judge people who practice Christianity in a different way in comparison to us. This is why it is acceptable for men to shave their beards because it can be said that they feel it's morally okay. Again, that doesn't mean that those who don't shave their beards are holier than those who don't. With that said, there are some things that will always be the same such as the creation story, the ten commandments etc.

The old testament is not to be ignored...Jesus made this plain...

(Matthew 24:36-39) “Concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 For just as the days of Noah were, so the presence of the Son of man will be. 38 For as they were in those days before the flood, eating and drinking, men marrying and women being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark; 39 and they took no note until the flood came and swept them all away, so the presence of the Son of man will be.

The story of Noah is fact and is totallt from the OT

Jesus never denied a single statement or prophecy in the OT.

    Neither should we.

I believe that you died on the cross for me, to save me. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life, I give it to you. Help me to live every day in a way that pleases you. I love you, Lord, and I thank you that I will spend all eternity with you

I am not exactly sure why this is but it also may be with the denomination of Christianity. There are various different denominations that exist today, and although all believe in the Trinity and in one supreme God, there may be certain details that vary. I personally have not heard christians say that the Old Testament is old fashioned but maybe they mean that the New Testament clarifies on a certain aspect that was mentioned in the Old Testament.

You're missing some key facts, and you're making assumptions.

The laws that people like to point out that Christians don't follow are the Levitical laws of cleanliness and ritual purity that were addressed to the Jewish people and kept as a sign of their faith in God. Those laws were NEVER addressed to any Gentile.

Even the early Judeo-Christians understood this. In the book of Acts, chapter 15, the leaders of "the way," (what the early Christian movement was called) are attempting to say that new Gentile converts should have to follow the rules of Judaism. The Apostle Peter pointed out to the crowd that the faith of Gentiles was just as good as that of Jews; The Apostle James, Jesus' brother, then made the point that there was no need to apply those rules to the Gentiles, since Jesus' sacrifice was sufficient.

Christians have not been expected to follow those rules since. The Christian Jews even dropped them, because they understood that their purpose was complete.

People who don't read the bible always take one scripture and use it as if it's valid and in practice today. The law of Moses was abolished, not the entire old testament. The law caused people to have to kill animals to make sacrifices for sins. That is no longer done anymore. As well as a whole list of other things that aren't done anymore. Basically you've already made your mind up to not believe so I really don't know why you're asking this question.

it's not that the OT is obsolete. the law is to be our instructor in how we live our lives. there are some things done in the OT that were changed at a later time. you have to use the WHOLE Bible, not just one part or another. the Old Testament was in full force until the death of the testator which is Jesu Christ. now the New Testament is in full force. we no longer live under the law, but grace. if you will pray, ask for God's guidance & rightly divide the Scriptures, it will make much more sense to you. Best of wishes to your future Bible reading. a good old KJV is a great start.

I still think the Old Testament is relavent. About 2 weeks ago I finished reading all of it :) reading the old testament helps you get more context for the New Testament and helps you know God the Father and God the Son (even though he had not come to Earth yet Jesus is referenced mant times in the Old Testament) The laws (other than the 10 comandments) are not used because Jesus fufiled their purpose when he died on the cross for our sins.

The OT laws was for the nation of Israel, of the jewish people. God made a covenant with Abraham & his people. When Jesus made himself a sacrifice that meant those following him who were adopted into his fathers family (gentiles) weren't Jews so they didn't have to be under the law.Jesus is the only way. We need to read the OT anyhow to understand what Jesus was teaching since that was all he had at the time scriptual wise.

The council of Jerusalem removed many of the old Jewish customs and laws found in the Old Testament.

Some things are retained, while other things are not. The Old Testament is still used and has many valuables lessons and stories, but not everything that was is still applied today.
