Anything wrong with illegal drinking & driving with child in car hits car takes off running?
BRIDGETON — Police discovered a man had been driving while intoxicated when he crashed into a parked car and then fled the scene with his 5-year-old son in tow.
Officers responded to the scene of the crash on Nichols Street after receiving a report that a vehicle had crashed into another car that was parked.
When they arrived, they determined that the striking vehicle, a 1995 Chevrolet Geo had been traveling on Nichols Street when it crashed into a 1997 Ford Expedition that was parked. The Geo was heavily damaged and the Ford moderately.
A citizen who had witnessed the accident saw the man leaving the scene and pulling a small child with him. Naturally concerned, the citizen followed the pair to a North Laurel Street address.
Police arrived at the address and found Edilser Lenus, 27. The address was his residence.
Lenus was bleeding from the nose, and he admitted to having been the driver of the Geo. Officers found his five-year-old son in the house, and he was also bleeding from the nose and was complaining of chest pain.
While at the scene, officers determined that Lenus was intoxicated due to the fact that he was unbalanced and smelled of alcohol. He refused to provide a breath test when taken to the police station.
Lenus was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, knowingly leaving the scene of a crash, aggravated assault, and driving while intoxicated. Police also learned that Lenus was in the country illegally.
He was committed to the Cumberland County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail for the offenses but will not be released if he pays it because of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detainer that he has placed on him.
His son was taken to the South Jersey Healthcare - Regional Medical Center by a Bridgeton Fire Department ambulance, and police notified his mother who lives in Hammonton.
