Who was the artist that would kill birds and use them to create still lifes?

I cannot remember the name of the artist. BUt apparently he would kill these birds and use them to create his own still life studies.

Anyone have any idea or know where I could look?

I think you mean Jean Jacques/John James Audubon (1785-1851). He was a taxidermist as well as an artist, and he killed birds and stuffed them. Here's one source on him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_James_Audubon
