ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) is a formal denotation of various semi-rimmed cartriges. They are all straight-sided and are mostly associated with the advent of the Colt M1905 and M1911 pistols (the round being primarily produced for them) in the early 1900s. John Browning is often credited as the designer of the ACP-styled round. He later designed a 9mm derivative of the M1911, called the Hi-Power.

The M1911 has performed for more than a century due to its rugged capabilities and the very round it immortalized, the 0.45 ACP. Current derivatives of the M1911 are still in use with the United States Marine Corps today as the M-45 MEUSOC.
