Question about Maryland's referendum process........?

The state of Maryland appears likely to pass gay marriage.......

and opponents appear likely to put a referendum the ballot,

a vote that will take place in 2012.

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/01/12/marylan...

which leaves me with 2 questions:

1. When in 2012? The February Primary? or the November General?

2. Is the law gonna be put on hold for a year and a half?

or will gay marriage be legal for the time being?

From my knowledge of referenda they usually take place in the general election, because , this ensures a higher voter turn out than in a primary. Secondly because of the fiscal crisis I doubt that any state would want to hold both, primaries and general elections,.

In addition Gov O'Malley said he would sign such bill, and the Democrats have a majority in the legislature. So this would be the road to go. However ,the homophobes would try to get a referemdum to repeal the bill, as they did in California . So nothing is 100% Hope the bill passes

    Hope this helps
