There is no magic about sound wave propagation. The energy is nothing but mechanical vibrations of particles. That implies presence of particles (or matter) and not empty Space. Every phenomenon is easy to explain in principle. What frightens the common person is the formidable array of mathematical equations to put the same principle in a precise and infallible language (of mathematics)
Sound is pressure waves, that propagate as vibrations of molecules, or liquid molecules if it is fluid. If it is solid the molecules held in the lattice vibrate and the wave is called 'phonon'.
In gaseous media, with which we are concerned, the vibrating molecules (about their mean positions) imply KE of vibrations the intensity of which is the 'root mean square'(rms) value. The vibrating particles (or molecules) transfer their vibrational energy to the next layer of particles and that is how the wave moves. If there is no molecule within its vibrating amplitude of distance, the vibration will remain static an eventually attenuate.
So, it is unthinkable (at least to me) as to how sound propagates in the emptiness of Space. I have had the occasion of being subjected to the 'tutorials' as to how Sound propagates in inter-stellar Space (in Y!A); but I was still full of elementary doubts. Even now I couldn't and didn't understand their thesis. But perhaps I must leave Physics (Science) to understand that. But I am sure many more like me are there who are handicapped because of Science education !
