    what you need to use the distributive property... or distribute the negative throughout the parenthesis

    - times k= -k - times -12= positive 12

    -11+k-k+12

    Now you need to combine like terms...

    -11+12+k-k

    The k's cancel out so you are left with -11+12, this equals to 1. 1 is your answer

    It would be, without parenthesis:

    -11 + k - k + 12

    because subtracting a negative is like adding a positive. So combine your like terms.

    -11 + 12 = 1

    k - k = 0

    It would be 1
