There are probably several ways to make an electric car. Ones that come to mind are:

convert a gas car to electric

assemble an electric kit car of which there are several

start from the ground up and build a new vehicle.

How you proceed depends upon the approach you take and there are companies that will do most or all of the work for you. Your budget may make some of the decisions for you. If it is severely limited you might consider an electric bike as a first project. An electric velomobile might give you more of the car feel at less of an expense. A conversion project can be done cheaply (1) but might cost you 5 to 15,000 or more. A kit car can also be very costly (2) but you may need to add another zero when building an electric car from scratch.

Facebook: Dean Kamen, entry #2 shows him on his invention: the Segway.

He could give you lots of pointers. He converted a Think-EV car to a hybrid

using a Stirling cycle engine. Notice his friends: mostly at Georgia Tech,

    a couple at M.I.T.

There's a company that will convert your compact car to electric (see link

below). Might be easier than doing it yourself. Or maybe they'll let you

watch while they do a conversion.

Hey, while your at it, do you mind if you make me a two person seat space shuttle? I'm not worried about fuel, as I plan on free gliding into a neighboring galaxy, and hopefully crash land on a planet. I don't really care if the planet has life or not, I just want to be out there, If you know what I mean.
