    Sudan was a fake country.

The British pieced the country together when they ruled much of Africa and gave it independence as a single country.

But northern and southern Sudan were competely different in character.

The north was a Muslim country, which was settled by the Arabs in centuries past.

The south was a black African tribal country, where they still worship traditional African gods (the religion "animism") and a few were converted to Christianity by missionaries.

So the two halves of Sudan never really fitted together. Splitting it is creating one Arab country and one black African country, which is how it should have been when it first gained independence from Britain.

Cultural sense of being distinct. The south wanted soverignty.

The south has been trying to separate for a long time

from the exploitative & domineering northern neighbor.
