Can digital photos be recovered from a crashed hard drive (black screen)?

Is this something a computer technician can do or am I simply out of luck for the photos?

You will need to recover the data using something like asoftech data recovery. http://www.asoftech.com/adr/

I've had to use it many times in the past but it will require that you plug that drive into another system as an external drive or slave drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files.

    Good luck.

It depends on crashed, how. If the hard drive is physically damaged, you might be out of luck. Does the drive make louder clicking noises than it ever did before? Is it showing up as a drive when you open My Computer? The answers you want to those questions are No to the clicking and yes, to showing up. Clicking is bad news. If it's clicking loudly, a professional would be the way to go. Otherwise, you can try recovering the files yourself with data recovery software. Have a look here:

If the disk drive is the one that you use for running Windows on your computer, take it out and "slave" it to another computer, either putting it inside (and setting jumpers for Master and Slave) or put it in an external caddy and plug it into the USB port of the other computer.

Don't install the software onto the drive with the lost photos and don't try to save recovered photos to the drive they came from. Doing either of these makes it likely you will overwrite photos yet to be recovered.

If you need any further help, sign up at Major Geeks and ask for help; someone should be able to guide you through.

P.S. Professional data recovery can be expensive but you may decide it's worth it; do some ringing around for prices before going anywhere. Any computer shop is likely to do that for you.

Yes, files can be recovered from a crashed hard drive. (in most cases) If the Motor that drives the paltters is out then it gets very hard.

You have to remove the hard drive from the computer it is current in and install it in a second computer as a D: or secondary drive.

Then on the origional computer you need to install a program called R-Studio and it will recover all of the files on the old hard drive. It can make an image of the drive and you can put that image on a larger external drive and recover the files from the image.

Source(s): have used R-Studio in the past. Best Recovery program available.

Most of the time its windows that has died not the hardware

If this is the case recovery is very easy and you can do it yourself

Boot the computer with a 'Live linux' cd http://puppylinux.org/main/Overview%20and%20Gettin... or http://cgi.ebay.com/Puppy-Linux-4-3-1-Run-Live-Ins... copy the files off the Harddrive. You could do this yourself if you want

EDIT:*** or use the bootable disks Bill.M lists in his answer

Or you can physically remove the drive and install it in a working windows or linux PC as a second drive. You may want some-one else to do this although it isn't hard

If the drive electronics or motor have failed it is more complicated but not especially difficult - you need a working drive of the same type and swap components - this requires ability and experience and a stack of assorted old drives

Yes, it is possible to recover deleted digital photos from a crashed hard drive. You can take out hard drive and then connect it to computer as an external hard drive, then try this tutorial

They may (MAY) be able to be recovered by a techie.

They will use an 'editing' program of the binary code to extract the files and save it to a disc.

(Not all techie shops are so equipped).

Good luck and bring cash or plastic.

    ;-)

All your data are still stored on the external hard drive. They are just inaccessible or invisible. Therefore you can recover your lost data from hard drive with data recovery software.I have succeed to recover data from crashed hard drive with 001 File Recovery. You can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your files can be recovered. It will show you files that you can get back.
