The term R&B, or Rhythm and Blues, originates from the late 1940s. By the 1950s R&B music was beginning to crossover onto pop radio. R&B music ushered in the era of rock 'n' roll and was an influence on early rock 'n' roll and country artists such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Carl Perkins.

R&B is a genre that has grown out of African American culture, and shows radical differences from the genres pioneered by Caucasian American and European cultures, like Western Classical Music or Rock and Roll. The R&B genre is an evolutionary result of multiple African American genres, including Jazz, Funk, Gospel and Soul.

Jane, r&b was out way before the 60's and before Motown.
