Yes , he was very famous in the years that you give and still is hugely popular. He had a particular look that made him look a "bad boy" as if he had been punched on the nose in a fight and featured in several avant-garde films noirs with famous actresses of the period.
He acted under the most famous French film makers such as tels Alain Resnais, Henri Verneuil, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, François Truffaut, Claude Sautet, Jean-Pierre Melville, Claude Lelouch, Georges Lautner, Gérard Oury as well as foreign directors such as Vittorio De Sica ou Mauro Bolognini. Many of his films became cinema classics especially Le Professionnel, Borsalino, À bout de souffle, Le Magnifique, Un singe en hiver, Pierrot le fou, Le Cerveau and L'As des as.
He became a producer himself but had to retire recently due to ill health.

Certain films he acted in are still regarded as the best fims of that era, and he is known even by the younger French generation, just like Brigitte Bardot who stopped acting years before he did, and Jeanne Moreau who, at the same age, has acted as recently as in the film Ever After with Drew Barrymore.
