There actually is some validity to this question, at least the first part. Up until a small group of white American businessmen interested in the sugar trade overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893, the string of islands in the Pacific Ocean was indeed its very own country. It then became a territory of the U.S. and eventually gained statehood in the 1950s. Hawaii has always been a part of the continent of Asia, however, and has never been a continent by itself. Though islands can double as continents, Australia is the only one to do so.

It depends on your definition of continent. Believe it or not, depending on which group you ask there may be 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or more continents on Planet Earth. Hawaii is generally considered to NOT be a part of any continent at all. It's special in that it is the only U.S. state "not a part of the North American mainland". It's not located on the North American tectonic plate (but neither is part of California), but rather in the middle of the Pacific plate, so geologists wouldn't consider it part of North America. There are lots of small islands in the Pacific that aren't part of any continent, like Hawaii, and they generally go by the term "Oceania". Hawaii is generally considered to fit in the "Polynesia" subregion of Oceania. Other places in this collection of Pacific islands includes places like Fiji, French Polynesia, Easter Island, the Federated States of Micronesia, and even New Zealand and Australia. Under one definition of continent, this would actually put Hawaii under the continent of "Australia and Oceania". If it was still an independent country, the nation of Hawaii would be represented by the Australia and Oceania "ring" in the Olympics (each of the 5 Olympic rings is often said to represent a continent among other things). For political purposes, however, since it is a U.S. state, people do associate it as part of North America. Its culture is a mix between modern North America and the native tribes of Oceania. So, to answer your question, "it depends". I wish there was a more concrete answer, but there isn't. So if you have to group it with a continent, I'd go with Oceania first (if possible), North America second, and Australia third (just like on the Risk game board).

Between the two, continent would be the more appropriate answer. It's not a country on it's own, but rather a state within a country. It is considered to be a part (the extreme edges) of the continent of Australia (Oceania).
