Off the top of my head these are ones I usually listen to when I'm sad:

The All American Rejects - Paper Heart

Say Anything - A Walk Through Hell

The Used - All That I've Got

Less Than Jake - The Rest Of My Life

    Plain White T's - Hate

This one by Summertime's End is the best breakup song I know.

    2008 (Nadia's Goodbye)

    Lyrics:

I found some perspective gathering dust

In the back of my drawer

I didn't know it was there but I'm glad 'cause I've never needed it more

And I found the letters that we used to write

    Just a few years ago

I didn't know things had changed that much but I guess that now it shows

And it's what I make of this

That defines just who I am

And I know your mind won't change

    'Cause you just don't understand

And I know the times were good

But that's what memories are for

I can live without you here

    I don't need you anymore

Yeah, life was a canvas and we had a brush

And we'd paint our every day

But now you're gone and I'm left with a smear and a thousand shades of grey

So I'll pack my bags up 'cause I'm moving out

    By tonight I'll be gone

I'll leave this life and I'll say goodbye

    'Cause I am moving on

This is how I leave you behind

And this is how I wipe you from my mind

Well, The artists you've listed above, make some sad songs every now, and again....but you already know this because you have them listed yourself (with exception of the song titles). Therefore, it would be kinda pointless to go in that direction. If you want something very powerful...emotionally driven material, to make you sad, or even make you cry (if you're thinking of becoming an actor) I suggest listening to some movie scores. Or soundtracks that you're familiar with. For example Gladiator: The Soundtrack, Titantic: The Soundtrack, or Requiem for A Dream : The Soundtrack, etc.

My favorites are these scores conducted by Hans Zimmer

    Inception's "528491":

    Batman Begins' "Tadarida":

Well I assume you're talking about older Sia stuff she's quite upbeat now. But anyway check out Elliot Smith. It's quite different from the stuff you listed but it's the best. Who knows you may find a new love.

You should try some Leonard Cohen. Songs like 'Alexandra Leaving', 'In my Secret Life', 'A Thousand Kisses Deep', 'Who by Fire?', etc. Sad, but not Elliot Smith (though he is great too) suicidal.

Also try movie soundtracks. Hans Zimmer's 'Tears of the Sun' (try 'the journey/kopano pt. 3' & 'the jablonsky variations on a theme/cameroon border post') has me blubbing on the subway, as does his collaboration with Lisa Gerard on 'Gladiator' (try 'now we are free'.)

  • I don't think it's your thing, but there are a lot of sad Dustin O'halloran,Yann Tiersen, Ryuichi Sakamoto (the song I specifically have in mind is "Bibo no Aozora" It's a really touching piece), Hiromi, Olafur Arnalds etc songs. I'd check them out.
