As long as you not try to flash US currency around too many places, walk in dodgy allies and advertise you are a tourist you will be just fine! Think of being in New York and then half that thought, that is Cape Town - really nice place.
Your hotel will be able to advise you on good places to go to and if you can afford to get a driver to take you places you will be more than just a great experience. Tourists, not only Americans, get wacked because they go to places they would not even think in their own countries and secondly they believe their nationalities are superior to those from different continents - something some of them pay a dear price for in the end.
If you wish to do the "tourist" image thing, backpack, sport shoes and a map, then just stay in public areas and always be observant to your surroundings - human nature to know you messed up and you are not where you are supposed to be.
Enjoy it - Cape Town is really fantastic - even for Americans!
