How can athiests possibly not belive in god?

our priest was telling us today how if the earth were 10 feet closer to the sun we would all burn and if it were 10 feet farther away we would all freeze. Obviously god did this on purpose because he is great, how can athiests not see this even with "scientific" facts behind it?

Honey, we evolved here BECAUSE the Earth is where it is, not the other way around. Life won't evolve on worlds that are incapable of sustaining it. Simple as that. We are already starting to find other Goldilocks planets, so the chances of us finding life elsewhere in the universe just because the conditions were right on THOSE planets is high.

Not to mention that your pastor is wrong. The Earth has changed position more than 10 feet in relation to the sun many times over the last 200,000 years and mankind is still kicking.

There are no scientific facts that support the existence of a god, especially the Christian god. Christians simply take scientific facts and warp them until they believe that those facts somehow support a god's existence.

The earths orbit changes by thousands of miles to br closer or further away from the sun every year. That's the effect of having an elliptical orbit. Your priest is sadly very mistaken. 10 feet won't make a difference at all.

the fact that if the earth was 10 feet closer to the sun or 10 feet away from the sun is a scientific fact completley seperate from God. that doesnt prove anything about our existence other than what you just said. that has nothing to do with the existence of God. its your own opinion and views that make you think its evidence..heres an example...

the media keeps telling us things like tomates cause cancer, and weed can iduce schizophrenia...there is no evidence of any of those things. the reason why they can get a way with that is because there's a "link" between the two. It could be that out of a study of 100 people with (lets just say) lung cancer. 75 of them had a diet that regularly contained tomatoes...and the same for the weed example...and that is what you just did....you saw a link and considered it evidence.

The earth has an elliptical orbit around the sun, meaning the distance from the sun changes as the year goes on. This difference is far greater than 10 feet.

Surprise surprise, your priest is wrong.

Well, first off, the Earth does not move in a circle around the sun, and it varies the distance wildly: 91,780,000 miles at perihelion to 94,870,000 miles at aphelion.

The estimated habitable zone for life as we know it in our solar system extends from just outside the orbit of Venus to just inside the orbit of Mars. That means that Humans could survive, given our extreme adaptability, if the Earth moved 220 million miles farther away.

A bad understanding of science is a REALLY bad argument against actual science.

That is simply NOT true. I'm not refuting god here. Just all that crap about 10 feet.

Here's the real score for anybody keeping track at home:

    Earth orbit, Aphelion: 152,097,701 Kilometers

    Earth Orbit, Perihelion: 147,098,074 Kilometers

Difference: 4,999,627 Kilometers Or about 16,403,776,187 feet. That's 16 and a half TRILLION feet. not 10.

your priest lied to you.... again

you can climb 10 feet up a ladder or a hillside and not burn.... what makes you think the whole planets doesnt get 10 or 12 feet closer to the sun in the course of a year? the earths orbit isnt that stable, you know

Uhhh, the Earth already moves millions of miles from it's closest point to it's farthest from the Sun. It does nopt go in a perfect circle around the Sun, 10 ft means nothing when you are talking about millions...

There is nothing 'scientific' in the lies he is telling you...

    I can only hope you're a troll..

    IMHO

Your priest is an idiot (or a liar, I don't know which).

During our annual orbit, our distance from the sun varies by more than 4 *million* miles.

Right now you're about 3.2 million miles further from it than you were last June.

Point out those facts to your priest, tell him to get some education...and then go learn what an "argument from incredulity" is, and why it's a worthless fallacy. OK?

    Peace.

You make such a basic error. We are adapted to the Earth, not vice-versa.

And your priest (if he exists - ooh, why dies that sound familiar?) is ignorant about science. 10 feet? Hah!

It's God, not god. Show some respect. And ask him to teach you how to spell atheist.

I reckon you're just out playing with us.
