The medical profession is learning more about diabetes every day. A few decades ago we didn't know very much about what caused this disease. Enviromental factors, genetic, and non controllable situations all contribute to this disease. So what are some of the major diabetes causes and what can you do about them? What things could you do? We've discussed in this answer some of the causes that may or may not be in your control.
Some things you can do about them are
Drinking heavily is not preferrable. Too much drinking is one of the leading causes of diabetes, especially in older men. Alcohol and its empty calories and lots of fat can adversely effect all the different parts of your body. Alcohol affects more than just liver function. Cholesterol levels can be raised as well. Long term, heavy drinking can also raise blood pressure levels and cause diabetes. You can drink a glass of wine a couple times a week without worry though. Spending a few hours drinking every night, however, can be very harmful.
If you have a problem with how much you drink you should seek treatment.
How much moving around or excercise do you get? Scientists now know that a sedentary lifestyle can contribute heavily to whether or not a person develops diabetes. Do you know what that means? It means you need to get up and move around! Excercise for thirty minutes a day minimum to stay healthy. Excercise does not need to be high intensity. You don't have to run a marathon to stave off diabetes, even just around the block can be enough. This is indeed the single most simple way to prevent diabetes. You are still sitting there why? Get up off your butt and walk!
It is a fact that overweight people are more likely to develop diabetes. Thanks to new developments there are a lot of options out there for people who struggle with their weight and who want to keep diabetes from taking hold. Getting your weight under control can be achieved if we work at it. Some can do this through diet and exercise. Surgical intervention may be an option for those who can't control their weight with diet and exercise alone. Discuss your weight controll issues with your physcian. In most cases, diabetes can be avoided. Since type 1 diabetes is determined more by genetics and ethnicity, it is harder to avoid. Because the factors of type 2 diabetes are more environmental, we are better able to avoid it. If you feel you may be at risk for developing either type of diabetes, consult your doctor. They are the one who will be able to best assist you in avoiding this disease.
