Why is geometric sequences called "geometric"?

I thought geometry has something to do with shapes.

-a question by my 5th grade son!

Update:

I'm not asking what geometric sequence means, I'm asking why it is called "geometric." Thanks for answering the question.

The number multiplied each time is constant (always the same).

    2,4,6,8,10

    multiple of 2 so r=2

    Geometric Sequence example:

    a/r, a, ar

In this sequence the common ratio between two consecutive terms is constant[r]...which means sequence is geometric
