Unless you have magical hair, hair and heat does not really go together. It's safer for the hair if you try to use the damp hair method, and try to make it air dry, and do not take the braids/buns out until it's completly dry! I've heard people say that if you spray the hair with hairspray just before you start to let it dry, it will make the waves better. Although, I've never tried it.

    have you tried this?

get your hair a little bit wet, put it in a ponytail. (two or more ponies if you want tighter waves.) Now twist the hair and once its hard twisted, wrap it into a bun. Now go to sleep. If you're a tosser and turner in bed, secure everything with lots and lots of bobby pins! When you take it out, it will be loose waves/curls! be sure to use hair spray after you take it out so they don't loosen up during the day.

Try this method to get tight curls. (but you can manipulate the loose-ness) Here are two videos from Michelle Phan's youtube channel:

Put your hair in a braid while it's still damp and let it dry like that. Take it down, and voilà! Wavy hair. I do this all the time on myself.
