because the GOP largely recruits based on certain things.
Guns, God, Oil, Racism & hating homos.
It isn't just a rich or poor check list
1."they'll take our guns" doesn't have the same scary resonance when you live in a city environment. It simply doesn't sell.
2. Being an urban, educated business, a higher percentage of people involved in finance aren't born again Christians. Guess what? Many Jews have memories more than ten years old. Guess what? The bible thumpers actually turn off many from main stream Christian religions.
3. Anyone in finance for instance won't be attracted to GOP's "rape the wilderness" campaign. They often live in cities of the Northeast, where anyone over forty can remember how bad the air used to be.
4. Racism. Save the denial. The GOP plays on it and it just doesn't sell to people in cosmopolitan areas as well as it does in rural towns, where hating outsiders is the gold standard.
5. Homo hating. Despite what TV pretends, heartland America still isn't the friendliest place for the uncloseted. Not every gay Nebraskan moves to a coast, but enough of them do coupled with the mass of people in urban areas, that everyone does know or is related to someone. That person, not ridden out of town on a rail. The open hatred in the GOP over gay rights means a lot of people have trouble honestly joining the party, no matter how much extra money they get promised.
