Why is American architecture so much ugly compared with European architecture?

All American cities look like New York, same same big tall square building... BORING!

For what period are you talking about?

America didn't do too badly before the WW2. Consider buildings like the Empire State building and the Chrysler Building or the monuments in Washington.

You are correct that contemporary architecture doesn't compare with older European architecture but then again post WW2 European architecture doesn't compare with older European architecture either.

This is because, as we all know, most european countries are older than the United States, and because of this, they have older, finer looking buildings, that are not very practical but definitely something to look at. Also, the stereotypical "euro" look is modern, progressive, and advanced. While, the US focuses on practicality, in order to save money, in the name of safety as well. Not saying that European buildings are unsafe. And finally, it's mostly about personal preference.

  • There are some interesting designs here but I agree, Europe has much more interesting architecture!

Because America would rather have quantity over quality, big, bigger, biggest, the hell it looks like crap, but there is more of it.. Good example is automotive industry, crap but plenty of it. USA has a short footprint when it comes to history, and cannot reproduce masterpieces that been around for thousands of years.

There is more history in Europe than America because no one knew it was even there til 1492; the only people who lived there were the natives who were not as developed as the Europeans at that point.

Think you meant to say "all United Statesian cities" not all American cities. Rio, Lima, Mexico, Buenos Aires and many more look very different from the typical United Statesian city, and they are all American cities.

    America & Europe=continents

    the US & Germany=nations
