There are many options for software, check here for a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_audio_worksta...

My personal preference goes to FL Studio Producer Edition. I love its work flow and it has one of the best piano rolls in my opinion. You can try the demo version which is fully functional but you'll need to buy a license in order to reopen saved projects. Here's a link for 10% discount on a license https://support.image-line.com/jshop/shop.php?offe... (this link works for new customers only)

I have a Novation Remote SL keyboard which I think is great, but the new M-Audio ones are good too. You might want to check out some models in a store to see what you like best. Some have many sliders and knobs for controlling stuff, others just keys. Don't know what you're looking for.

Most new computers are fine for music production. Dual or quad core is a plus, also get 2 or more GB memory. More important, you might want to invest in a good audio interface. Most PCs have a cheap audio card which will do fine for regular computer use but for music production you should check some USB or Firewire audio cards. These will perform better and give you more options for recording external audio like mic or guitar, etc.
