Probably best to understand exactly what your credit history looks like before you apply, there's a lot you can do to tidy up your credit position before you apply. You can get a free copy of your credit report here.

If you have had serious problems with CCJ's and defaults, its unlikely you'll be accepted for a card that actually offers you credit in the current financial climate, all the financial institutions are being extra picky at the moment who they deal with because of the huge number of potential extra redundancies expected in 2011.

You can always get a prepaid card, at least you can then shop online etc.

Orchard Bank is a popular issuer to people with bad credit.

You can search for credit cards using the site below. On the left pane, there is a section called "Search by Credit Quality". Click on Bad Credit and it will give you a list of credit cards that are issued to people with bad credit.

This site has another feature to it. It can give you a list of cards that you personally will likely qualify for. It is called Card Match and can be accessed by clicking near the top. You key in your personal information and the site will access your credit history. There is no fee and the site won't save your personal information. You can; however, save the list it gives.

Simply getting a credit card will not help you build, re-build or re-establish your credit history. Making on-time minimum payments with all of your creditors and keeping account balances low relative to the credit limit are key to rebuilding your credit history. Prepaid debit cards, unlike credit cards, do not provide a line of credit and do not influence your credit history. Choose from secured and unsecured credit cards, and prepaid card offers .
