What are the major differences in the German language?
I know that the German language when spoken is different among its major speaking countries (Austria, Switzerland and such). Just how different is it? I would like to learn standard German (here in America) and I'd like to know if it varies a great deal (like would it be usable) or if the variation is slight enough.
Thank You! (Vielen Danke :0) )

Standard German (or Hoch Deutsch) is known in every country who speak a dialect of German. (Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein and Austria)
However, the dialects of German are very different and are almost like another language if you spoke normal german. If you were to speak to someone who spoke a dialect of german in High German, then they'd understand you and speak back to you in high german as it is their base language. They speak high german at school because high german (in the dialect area's) is considered the formal language.

... By a few specifications, many English-audio system, even extremely expert ones, mispronounce specified borrowed German phrases in English. Examples incorporate clinical phrases (Neanderthal, Loess), company names (Adidas, Deutsche Bank, Porsche, Braun) and names within the information (Angela Merkel, Jörg Haider) ..

I lived in North-Rhine-Westfalia (North-West of Germany) At the age of ten my parents sent me to friends living in Bavaria for spending my holidays. My parents put me in the train and I traveled to Augsburg, where our friend's grand papa picked me up at the station. He told me something, but I haven't been able to understand one word of what he had said.
That's how different it can be.
But Swiss, Austria, Bavaria and all the others learn HighGerman at school. There first foreign language lol.
