TIN? Is there any IC (telecomute or other applicable) workers out there who can answer a question.?

I just got my first Independent Contractor telecommunications job, and I was looking over the W9 at the beginning it asks for your TIN, taxpayer identification number, what exactly is it, how do I go about getting one and how long does it take to get it? Thanks for answering.

It is issued either by the Social Security Administration (SSA) or by the IRS. A Social Security number (SSN) is issued by the SSA whereas all other TINs are issued by the IRS.
